Riverside County, CA – Deputy Tyrell Young was not only a dedicated public servant but a beloved figure in the Riverside County community. Tragically, he became the first deputy in Riverside County to lose his life to COVID-19, leaving behind a legacy of service, courage, and kindness that will be remembered for generations.
Deputy Young had proudly served with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department for over a decade, fulfilling various roles with distinction. From patrol to community outreach, his goal was always the same: to protect and serve the people of Riverside County with integrity. Known for his unwavering work ethic and compassionate heart, Tyrell formed close bonds with his colleagues and community members alike, becoming a role model to those he worked with.
Colleagues describe him as a man of action who always placed others before himself. “Tyrell was the kind of person who would stay late just to make sure everything was in place and everyone was safe,” said one of his closest colleagues. “He always found time to lift others, even during the most challenging situations.”
Deputy Young was on the frontlines when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, responding to emergencies, maintaining public safety, and offering reassurance to citizens during an unprecedented time. Despite the risks, he continued his duties selflessly, knowing that his presence was essential in ensuring public safety during a period of crisis.
In late 2020, Deputy Young contracted COVID-19. His condition deteriorated quickly, and despite the best efforts of healthcare professionals, he passed away from complications of the virus. His death left the department and community reeling. Flags were flown at half-staff in his honor, and a moment of silence was held across the county to recognize his sacrifice.

Sheriff Chad Bianco reflected on Tyrell’s impact, saying, “Tyrell represented the very best of what it means to serve in law enforcement. He gave his life in the line of duty—just as surely as if he had fallen in the field—and for that, we owe him a debt of gratitude that we can never repay.” Kevin Faler, Retired Riverside County Corporal remembers working as a beat partner in the rough part of the county area and referred to Tyrell as a “Stellar Cop.”
Beyond the badge, Tyrell was a devoted father, husband, and friend. He is survived by his wife and two young children, who were the light of his life. His family remembers him as a loving husband with an infectious laugh and a father who always found time to play, no matter how long his shifts were.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department established a memorial fund to support Tyrell’s family and honor his legacy. In addition, the department is advocating for increased awareness about the health risks first responders face, especially during times of public health crises, to ensure that Tyrell’s sacrifice is not forgotten.
The community has rallied around Tyrell’s family, expressing their condolences with letters, flowers, and countless tributes. A candlelight vigil was held at the Sheriff’s station where Tyrell was last assigned, with hundreds of deputies, community members, and local leaders attending to honor his life and service.
“Deputy Young’s legacy will live on in the lives of those he touched, in the safety of the community he protected, and in the hearts of his family, friends, and colleagues,” said a fellow officer. “His loss is profound, but his spirit will guide us as we continue the work he dedicated his life to.”

His sacrifice stands as a reminder of the risks that first responders face every day and the importance of recognizing their contributions, especially during times of crisis.
